A few months ago on NPR did a story featuring a high school student, Davon Fleming, at an underperforming school in Baltimore. What struck me about this story, although NPR didn’t make the connection, was how his faith influenced him to try to transform his school. Davon Fleming is an example of Christ Transforming Culture.

The story stared with him meeting the Mayor of Baltimore who was visiting his school. While talking with him, the mayor learned that Devon’s goal was to become a famous singer. When the Mayor asked him to sing, he chose a praise chorus from his church.

As the story followed Davon through school it becomes evident that his faith influences more than his choice of songs. When some students become disruptive in another class, he tries to help the teacher regain control. Davon’s faith makes him want to change the way his world (school) works for the better of everyone involved. Although he is young, and this is a simple example, Davon is living the life of Christ Transforming Culture.
