Much to the shugrin of many a fundamentalist, it turns out that the Harry Potter series was Christian fiction all along. What makes this “Christian fiction"? I’ve written before on the great Christian fiction writers (Lewis and Tolkien). How does Rowling compare, as she engages culture from her Christian perspective?
Had she been a Christian author who wrote fiction that had nothing to do with Christ, she could be described as Christ and Culture in Paradox. According to Rowling, however, Christ is evident in her stories:
It starts with the premise that love can save you from death and ends with a proclamation that a sacrifice in the name of love can bring you back from it.
While Rowling isn’t as openly trying to promote Christ as Lewis, her use of fiction in order to explain a Christian theme of redemption could be described, as with Lewis, as Christ Above Culture.
