No, I’m not talking about some macabre recipe or something Nero did but a scene from Here Comes the Newlyweds, a new reality show on ABC. Last night one of the couples was “outed” as “trying to live their lives in light of their Christian principles.” This was an issue because the husband did not want to roast his wife- in the sense of a comedic monologue about his wife’s flaws. He did not think roasting his wife was consistent with his principles.
This is disappointing because as Christians we should be the first to laugh at ourselves. We can laugh so heartily and honestly because we know that we’ve been justified by Christ through our faith. The foundation of being a Christian is that we know we are sinners, and our sin is so bad it took the death of God’s own son to make up for it. When Christ died for our sins he left us forgiven and righteous before God. That means we have no reason to pretend we are not sinners- every time our sins (or failures) come up we should rejoice that we have Christ to pay for our sins or make up for our failures.
It is in this sense that I think Christians should embrace the roast as an opportunity to praise God for sending Christ.
